The Congressional Friends of Canada Caucus

 

The Caucus is a bipartisan group of Members of Congress working to enhance the relationship between Canada and the United States.  Specifically, the Caucus focuses on border security and commerce, energy cooperation and tourism.

Facts about Canada-US Relations

Canada supplied the U.S. with:

  • 85 percent of its natural gas imports;
  • 96 percent of its electricity imports;
  • 27 percent of its uranium used in the production of nuclear power; and
  • 16 percent of its imports of crude and refined oil products - more than any other country.

The United States and Canada are each other's largest trading partners with over $1.3 billion in trade crossing the Canada-US border every day.

5½ million American jobs depend on Canadian imports from the United States.

Canada is the leading foreign source of energy to the United States, including oil.

Canada's oil sands contain 1.7 to 2.5 trillion barrels of oil -- significantly more than in Saudi Arabia.

On September 11, 2001, 252 jets bound for the United States were rerouted to Canada and all of the passengers were treated like family.
