WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Henry E. Brown Jr. (R-SC) issued the following statement on Guantanamo Bay terrorist prisoner Ahmed Khalfan that has been transferred and is now being tried in New York City:
“In spite of serious questions and concerns raised by Members of Congress from both parties and a lack of support from the majority of the American public, the Obama Administration has taken its first step in a hasty and ill-advised plan to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay and import more than two hundred of the world’s most dangerous terrorists into America without a proper plan.
Coming from South Carolina, where the Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston is on the list of potential sites for relocating these terrorists, I am particularly passionate about making sure that the Administration's desire to bring these enemy combatants to the soil of the United States does not come to fruition.
In considering the best interest of the communities surrounding the Naval Brig, this must not happen. We have an obligation to protect our constituents from these terrorists and that is the bottom line.
Recently, I joined many of my House Republican colleagues in support of the Keep Terrorists Out of America Act, legislation that would serve to protect Americans and ensure that these dangerous individuals will not be moved to U.S. facilities.”
Ghailani has been indicted and pled not guilty yesterday to the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in East Africa.
A Gallup/USA Today poll released last week showed that by more than a three-to-one margin, Americans oppose moving terrorists from the Guantanamo Bay prison into their states.
