WASHINGTON- Congressman Henry E. Brown Jr. (R-SC) issued the following statement after opposing the Democrat’s trillion dollar spending bill. The plan, drafted by House and Senate Democrats behind closed doors, reduces the already meager amount of tax relief included for working Americans and small business while incorporating additional wasteful spending. Unlike the open lawmaking process promised by Democratic leaders, the legislation, which is the largest spending bill ever considered by Congress, was crafted with absolutely no Republican input and it’s text was only released to the public a few short hours before the vote.
“This is a raw deal for American families, and as my Republican colleagues realize the dire state of our economy, we vowed to not be the party of ‘no.’
After receiving thousands of calls in opposition to a wasteful and unnecessary stimulus plan, my fellow House Republicans and I proposed a better plan using fast-acting tax relief to create twice the jobs at half the cost for working families and small businesses.
While the Democrat spending plan will cost my constituents in the first district of South Carolina $2,063,113,200 and only create 54,000 jobs, the Republican alternative would create 88,000 jobs for the residents of coastal South Carolina, an area located in a state with a nine percent unemployment rate, the third highest in the nation.
Unfortunately, the voices of the South Carolina unemployed and the growing majority of the American public went unheard as the legislation that passed today falls short of any form of a legitimate stimulus.
The Democrats have taken an opportunity to craft a bill that will create jobs and used it as a vehicle to quickly legislate billions in wasteful spending that will create few, if any jobs, pet project funding and the beginnings of government-run health care for our nation. All the while, they have excluded Republicans from the process entirely.
This partisan legislation reduces even further job-creating infrastructure investments and cuts more than $75 billion of the meager tax relief included in the bill to less than 20%, only to make room for more government spending that will never create any jobs and will actually cost each and every individual more than $2,500 in new debt, to be paid for by our children and grandchildren.”
