Congressman Brown Joins in Welcoming His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI

to Washington

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Brown joined his House and Senate colleagues and over 47,000 worshippers at the Papal Mass in Washington, D.C.

Following the service, Congressman Brown made the following remarks:

“It was an honor to attend the Mass given by his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.  I was moved to see so many people joining together in celebration of the Pope’s message of optimism and renewal.  While America is a country of many diverse beliefs, Pope Benedict’s message to our nation today was one in which can all find meaning.”

South Carolina’s First Congressional District is home to The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, the ‘home church’ of the Catholic Diocese of Charleston.  The Diocese serves over 176,000 Catholics in South Carolina and was founded in 1820.

In addition to being the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the Holy Father is also the head of state for the Holy See, which comprises the Vatican City in Rome.
