WASHINGTON, DC — Six major veterans’ organizations with members in South Carolina, including AMVETS, Blinded Veterans Association, Disabled American Veterans, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Jewish War Veterans of the USA, and Vietnam Veterans of America, wrote to Speaker Pelosi over the “grave concerns” within the Democrats’ version of the national health care reform plan. Additionally, the American Legion wrote a letter to Rep. Henry Waxman , chief author of the Democratic health care bill, that it “is deeply concerned with veterans’ related issues” in the Democrats’ proposal.
As an advocate for veterans and their family members, Congressman Brown made the following statement against any health care reform legislation that would threaten the quality and availability of their medical care:
“As the Ranking Republican on the Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health, I share these veteran organizations’ concerns that this monstrous government takeover of health care could unfairly penalize veterans.
Since coming to Congress in 2001, and joining the Veterans’ Affairs Committee that same year, I have made it my solemn duty to ensure that our nation’s heroes and their families have access to the highest quality healthcare, benefits and services they have richly earned.
By ignoring our serious commitment to these brave men and women, the Democrats’ proposal for further government intervention into health care disrespects our veterans. Veterans enrolled in VA health care should never be subjected to taxes for failure to have ‘acceptable’ health insurance and I strongly stand with these veterans’ service organizations in opposition to this bill.”
