BROWN APPLAUDS ESSENTIAL HIGHER EDUCATION RENEWAL ACT

WASHINGTON – Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (SC) joined with a majority of his colleagues in support of legislation to overhaul our nation’s higher education laws. The Higher Opportunity Education Act (H.R. 4137) provides key reforms to make college more affordable to American students. Today’s legislation continues Congress’ bipartisan commitment to meeting the needs of our nation’s children. After passage of the legislation, Brown, a supporter of the No Child Left Behind Act, made the following statement:

“I am proud to have been part of this historic decision to modernize our higher education and student aid programs. We have passed important legislation that will help America’s children access higher education and reach their career aspirations.

Today, students face daunting obstacles on the path to college, but with this landmark, bipartisan legislation these challenges and a higher education system that is easier-to-navigate for college students and their families will be created. Today’s vote shows that we are putting the needs of our nation’s children first.”

With tuition and fees increasing across the board, the Higher Education Opportunity Act alleviates several financial pressures by streamlining the financial aid process, making textbook costs more manageable and increases the maximum Pell Grant to $8,000 while allowing these funds to be used year round. The bill will also strengthen college readiness programs, increase college aid programs for veterans and military families and ensure equal college opportunities for students with disabilities.
