Congress Honors Brookgreen Gardens

Resolution Introduced by Congressman Brown Passses House

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Henry Brown was joined by his colleagues in the House of Representatives in passing a resolution honoring the 75th Anniversary of Brookgreen Gardens.   Located in Murrells Inlet, the popular South Carolina landmark is designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service.

Following passage of the resolution Congressman Brown said:

“I thank my colleagues for joining me in honoring a beloved South Carolina landmark: Brookgreen Gardens.  I also appreciate my fellow members of the South Carolina delegation who showed their unanimous support for one of the most beautiful places in our state by co-sponsoring this legislation.  I am proud to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Brookgreen Gardens and wish them well for the next 75 years.”

Brookgreen Gardens was first opened to the public by Archer and Anna Huntington in 1932 to preserve the native flora and fauna of costal South Carolina and to display works by American artists in the nation’s first public sculpture garden.

Robert Jewell, President and CEO of Brookgreen Gardens, issued the following statement:

“We are extremely pleased that the resolution acknowledging Brookgreen Gardens' 75th Anniversary was approved by Congress.  We are most appreciative of Congressman Brown's effort in introducing the resolution and the subsequent recognition that Brookgreen is truly a national treasure.”
