CHARLESTON, SC – Today, Congressmen Henry Brown joined his colleague, Congressman Jim Clyburn, at a press conference to announce the Gullah/Geechee Corridor Commission.
Congressman Brown made the following remarks:
“Last Congress, I was proud to be an original cosponsor of the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Act which was an important piece of legislation that my good friend Jim Clyburn had been the champion of for many years. The contribution of the Gullah/Geechee culture to South Carolina’s Lowcountry is one of the reasons that it is such a wonderful place to visit and live in. I am happy to be here today to see that the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor has become a reality and the process is moving forward.”
Designated by Congress in 2006, the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor recognizes the important cultural contributions made by Africans and African-Americans who settled in coastal Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. In South Carolina, the Gullah/Geechee Heritage Corridor encompasses Beaufort, Charleston, Colleton, Georgetown, Horry, Jasper and parts of Berkeley and Dorchester Counties.
